There isn't much to celebrate; there never has been. A glance at the whole of history – or at least what we think of as history – is enough to realise that humanity has achieved little that is worth remembering. A kind act is a lone island in an ocean of terrible deeds. Every positive deed comes with a hundred negative ones that leave you dismayed. You go out for a beer to get some air, but the feeling of failure won't leave you.
Commemorating two hundred or a thousand years of emancipatory heroism seems both obscene and frivolous. It begins with supporting those who start wars yet lack the courage to serve on the front line. And if that weren't enough, it glorifies patriotism, highlighting the pathetic excesses of anger and pride that divide people.
