"Romeo&Julia"
By William Shakespeare
In a version by Martin Heckmanns.
In this stage adaptation, the Montagues originate from the Arab world, while the Capulets hail from Europe. The two families are enemies. Despite this, or perhaps because of it, their children Romeo and Juliet fall in love. Against all odds, they remain faithful to each other until death. It is a bitter sacrifice that brings a hard-won peace.
In recent years, Shakespeare's theme has taken on new relevance in Europe and here in Dresden: new arrivals from the Arab world and German nationals have fallen in love and formed couples. How do these relationships deal with cultural differences? How does the environment react? How can love withstand potential outside pressure? The performance combines staged action with documentary video footage. To create this, the artistic team and performers interviewed couples, parents, friends, religious representatives, legal scholars and others about their experiences, opinions and the current legal situation.
