Rigoletto
Opera by Giuseppe Verdi with a libretto by Francesco Maria Piave, based on the Victor Hugo drama Le roi s'amuse.
At the court of the Duke of Mantua, free love and sexuality reign supreme. 'Only those who wish to remain faithful should do so,' says the Duke. Ironically, however, the Duke's court jester and spokesman, Rigoletto, secretly advocates bourgeois morality and does everything in his power to protect his private life and his daughter, Gilda, from the supposed escapades of the courtly class. After the Duke and Gilda meet, Rigoletto's world is turned upside down, with fatal consequences. But what is the correct idea of love and relationships? With this opera, which premiered in 1851, Verdi made an important contribution to his musical-dramatic oeuvre, showcasing unprecedented musical and formal coherence, as well as sensitive characterisation.
