“Nucleus 5, making of”
At the heart of the matter lies the question: what is the essence of opera, contemporary musical theatre and individual compositions? Or is it a question about the essence of opera and musical theatre today, and what defines these genres? What can it be reduced to that still makes us think, 'It's musical theatre!'? This would be the question of form. And what is the core? Is it a beginning, a new start — a dormant possibility that can germinate, develop and unfold under favourable conditions? Or is it the end of a process: the quintessence, so to speak; the tiny end product of maturation with the potential for renewal? Is the core the whole condensed and compressed, or the beginning, the germ cell? The result: eight interjections before the full-length productions of the Biennale – eight core statements in the musical theatre prelude.
