Die Räuber (I Briganti)
'Melodramma serio' in three acts
by Saverio Mercadante.
Libretto by Jacopo Crescini.
Schiller's great drama about freedom is one of the most famous works in German theatre literature. This rare opera, based on Schiller's classic, explores the themes of exclusion, belonging, and crossing socially defined boundaries in the finest Italian bel canto tradition.
The opera, which premiered in Paris in 1836, is based on Schiller's classic Die Räuber (The Robbers), but the plot does not begin until the fourth act of the drama, when Karl Moor (Ermano) returns to his home castle.
